Warning: Potential Spoilers
So, 12/21/2012 is around the corner: you’ve got no plans, and no one’s around to spend one of the most anticipated/oveerrated day in the history of human kind, so what’s left to do? Play video games of course! Here’s the Top 5 games you should play while awaiting the apocalypse!
|1.||The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask||N64/Gamecube/Wii|
This one’s a no-brainer: the game literally WREAKS of doomsday! First released back on the Nintendo 64, and then again on the Gamecube, and then most recently the Wii’s Virtual Console, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is largely considered one of the, if not, the best Zelda game out there (of course, popular opinion dictates that Ocarina of Time holds that position, or at the very least, Skyward Sword). You’ve got three days to save the world from a falling moon, and to do so, you’ll have to scour the land for various masks to complete your quest. Each mask holds a unique ability, and transforms you from anything ranging from a Zora to a Goron, helping you complete your tasks and kick ultimate bad guy arse. Oh, and for you time traveling fanatics? There’s some of that in here as well!
If The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is all about preventing the end of the world, then Darksiders is about correcting a mistake after the world ended! Largely considered to play just about like most Zelda games, Darksiders is a grim yet fantastical game about one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, War, who had a bit of a miscommunication on when the world was going to end. You’ll punch, hack and slash your way past enemies, solve puzzles, and explore a rather expansive world. It even combines “finisher” moves in the style of Mortal Kombat that you can use to just make overkill out of all who oppose your might! If you’ve like the Zelda games, but wanted a bit more gritty violence, this is definitely the game you’ll want to play. Of course, this game is actually quite old, so you can also pick up Darksiders II for XBOX 360, PS3, PC, and the recently released Wii U to continue the story!
|3.||Any Final Fantasy game||NES/SNES/Gamecube/Wii/GBA/DS/3DS/PS1/PS2/PS3/XBOX 360/PC/iOS/Android|
When the words “Final Fantasy” come to mind, what do you think of? Do you think of the popular Final Fantasy VII, or could you be thinking perhaps about the lovey-dovey stories, the classic Black Mage, or a Carbuncle? Though most Final Fantasy games have an end-of-the-world storyline, that’s actually not the reason why it’s on this list. The real reason is, of course, that this is the 25th Anniversary of the franchise! The first Final Fantasy was meant to be the last game company Squaresoft was ever going to make, however, the reception and sales from the game were quite large, and it saved the company. The series alone have defined RPG elements and some pretty astounding graphical accomplishments, as well as having a deep gameplay experience for most of the games. Whether you play the core Final Fantasy games (Final Fantasy I through XIII-2), the MMOs, or even the spin-offs like Crystal Bearers, Chocobos Tales, or Theatrhythm, you’re bound to have a good time!
|4.||Left 4 Dead/Left 4 Dead 2||XBOX 360/PS3/PC|
Y’know, you can’t really have an apocalypse without mentioning the zombie apocalypse, and the Left 4 Dead series is by far one of the best post apocalyptic zombie games out there! With you and three other survivors, you’ll fight your way past hoards of zombies, shooting, slashing, hacking, and blowing up zombies with virtually anything you can find and use. There’s a catch though: these zombies have superpowers! No longer will you have to face mindless, brain-hungry zombies that are restricted to inhumane strength and that slow, death-inducing walk, you’ll have to face zombies that jump, spit, and lunge at you with infected bio matter. There’s plenty of modes to go around, so whether you’re free balling it by yourself and a few AI, or playing with/against a team of other people, you’ll have a blast burrowing past zombies in hopes of survival!
|5.||Assassin’s Creed III||Wii U/XBOX 360/PS3/PC|
Last but not least, Assassin’s Creed III just released to consoles a few weeks back, and the reviews have mostly claimed that it is the best game in the series to date! The game is quite expansive, spanning from the seas to the early colonial years as you play your way through some of America’s greatest battles! Of course, outside of the old-fashioned colonial times, you’ll be reprising the role of Desmond, who, alongside a team of modern day assassins, seek to prevent the world from being destroyed by forces outside of humanity’s control. Of course, if you have yet to play any of the previous Assassin’s Creed games, you’ll probably want to brush up on the story, as each game in the core series continues and deepens the plot behind the secret war between the assassins and the Templars. Between jumping from high areas into suspiciously placed haystacks, stabbing Templars with a hidden blade, or even blending in with the crowd to evade pursuers, Assassin’s Creed is one of the finest games out there, and, for all of you long time Assassin’s Creed fans, you’ll definitely want to see how Assassin’s Creed III ends.
