Happy New Years everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve done a Card of the Night segment, as well as updating the blog with news stories across the interwebs, but I’m finally back and have some time to spend on the blog! Normally, the Card of the Night segments are usually released every Sunday at 23:00 sharp, however, we’ll be making an exception as the world heralds 2013.
Our Card of the Night tonight is Photon Strike Bounzer, a Rank 6, Light attribute, Warrior type monster with 2700 attack and 2000 defense. As it stands, Photon Strike Bounzer is the third strongest Photon monster in terms of raw power, standing behind Neo Galaxy-Eyex Photon Dragon and Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon. Also, following the tradition set by most of the other Photon archetype monsters, Photon Strike Bounzer carries an effect that is aimed to disrupt your opponent’s plays.
The effect is simple: By detaching one Xyz material on either players’ turn, you can negate a monster effect on your opponent’s side of the field and deal 1000 points of effect damage. This effect is limited to once per turn, and with its Xyz materials alone, you can use this effect up to two times, more if you have cards to add on Xyz materials.
Normally, Photon decks are not very well suited to handle Rank 6 summonings, but Photon Strike Bounzer’s summoning conditions are quite flexible; any two Level 6 monsters will do. For Photons, you can use two copies of Photon Leo and/or Twin Photon Lizard, or you can opt for other methods such as the Gagaga Magician/Gagaga Girl combo, two copies of Dragunity Knight – Vajrayana, an Inzektor deck based around Rank 6 Xyz summonings, or, my favorite, Hieratic cards based around Rank 6 Xyz summonings. The latter is most recommended, as Hieratics can focus on either Rank 8 or Rank 6 summons with ease, however, swarming the field with Dragunity Knight – Vajrayana in classic Dragunity decks have been shown to work just as well.
In a game where effects are king, Photon Strike Bounzer stands as one of the more prominent counters in terms of monster effects. Unfortunately, Photon Strike Bounzer cannot negate effects such as Rescue Rabbit or Tour Guide from the Underworld, as both do not activate on the field, however, for cards such as Evolzar Laggia, Heroic Champion – Excalibur, or Legendary Six Samurai – Shi En, Photon Strike Bounzer can make quick work out of their effects.
Photon Strike Bounzer stands as a temporary means to deal with monster effects, but it cannot stop more than one effect per turn, leaving you wide open for other options if your opponent runs a heavy swarm-based deck. The key, then, is to choose when it is the key point to counter your opponent’s maneuvers; by starting too early, you run the risk of being bombarded with subsequent effects, and by starting too late, you may find yourself unable to dig yourself out of a stick situation. When in doubt, then, prepare to predict moves by your opponents and recognize potential bluffs to make you use Photon Strike Bounzer’s effect prematurely. Simply knowing deck types and their strategies can help you in the long run, but by combining knowledge with back-up counters in case you choose wrong will help even more so.
Also, as Xyz monsters are becoming a prominent part of the game, more cards are being made to counter said monsters; either by specifically destroying Xyz monsters, or stealing their Xyz materials so their effects cannot activate. The latter is what you should worry most with Photon Strike Bounzer, as you are quite limited in the number of times that you can use its abilities, as well as being limited to up to 2 activations with its normal summoning requirements. So, as with any offensive manner, counter with deck staples such as Dark Bribe or Solemn Warning.
Overall, Photon Strike Bounzer is a well-rounded card; with 2700 attack, it can wipe out most of what your opponent can dish out, and with a monster effect negation effect, not many can stand one-on-one against it. The extra burn damage when successfully resolving its effect is a nice touch, but it replaces the common “negate and destroy” mechanic of other effect-counter cards. Nevertheless, any deck that focuses on Rank 6 Xyz summonings should carry at least one Photon Strike Bounzer in the extra deck as it has descent base stats and an offensive quick effect against other monster effects.
Summon Conditions: 8.0/10
Photon Strike Bounzer will only work with decks that focus on Rank 6 Xyz summons, therefore it is limited to only a few decks in this respect. However, for those types of decks, Level 6 monsters are easy to come by, and there is no better way to get out generic Rank 6 monsters than Hieratic decks with a few Wattaildragons or Hieratic Seal of the Dragon King.
Base Stats: 9.0/10
For a Rank 6, Photon Strike Bounzer has a relatively high base attack and defense, however, some may question whether 2700 attack/2000 defense is really worth the trouble of generating two other Level 6 monsters for its Xyz summon. Sword Breaker, another Rank 6 monster with relatively the same base stats, is capable of standing one-on-one against Photon Strike Bounzer in terms of raw power, but its Type-destroying effect can easily be mitigated by Photon Strike Bounzer’s own effect negation effect, therefore putting both at a suicidal stalemate if the latter is sent out before Sword Breaker‘s effect is resolved.
Monster effects are quite common these days, and Photon Strike Bounzer can quickly disrupt monster effects aimed to swarm or destroy other monsters on the field. The cost for the effect is relatively low, and you can damage your opponent’s life points all at the same time. Of course, its effect is useless against monsters who activate their effects outside of the field (e.g. hand, graveyard, or banish pile), therefore if negating monster effects is what you aim to do, incorporate cards such as Soul Drain to compliment Photon Strike Bounzer.
General Deck Usability: 5.0/10
As stated before, Rank 6 monsters are very limited to only a few decks that aim for Rank 6 Xyz summons. Seeing as most decks focus on either Rank 3, 4, or 8 Xyz summons, there is not a whole lot support for Rank 6 summons as of current.
Photon Strike Bounzer has great stats and an equally great effect, however, it currently stands in one of the more awkward Ranks to Xyz summon into. Of course, if you do have a deck built around Rank 6 Xyz summons, then Photon Strike Bounzer is a must, and with an upcoming reprint in the 2012 Wave 2.5 Collector’s Tin featuring Prophecy Destroyer, you won’t have an excuse not to get it!
