Microsoft has recently bought out the highly sought after R2 Studios, a company that was under the crosshairs of Apple and Google. For those of you who don’t know, R2 Studios is a company that works on the technology related to distribution and displaying digital media on televisions.
So, what does this mean? Well, yesterday, we posted that Microsoft had trademarked three streaming services: XBOX Sports, XBOX Fitness, and XBOX Now. With the recent obtainment of R2 Studios, it seems like Microsoft may be trying to turn the XBOX into a better media-focused machine rather than a gaming one. A smart move, really, as the XBOX 360’s lifespan is coming to a close, therefore in order to increase its lifespan just a bit more, a focus on digital entertainment rather than solely on games can help to do just that. No word yet on how R2 Studios will be integrated on either XBOX and/or PC systems, so this is just speculation.
