“Wait, humans can make sounds like that?” That’s precisely the question you’ll be asking when listening to various a capella vocalists, especially if the singer/songwriter is Mike Tompkins! Every song he has uses a specific sound that he himself formed and stored in an electronic player. Though he does have a few original songs, he is known mainly for his incredible electronic a capella renditions; he’s a one man band without any real instruments!
There are only a few other vocalists that can really compete with Mike’s style, namely, Peter Hollens. Nevertheless, it takes some serious talent and planning to make videos that involve multiples of yourself singing and creating sounds for the various parts of the music, and Mike has done just that! Whether it’s just mashing up songs like Taylor Swift’s I Knew You were Trouble with Justin Bieber’s As Long as You Love Me, or collaborating with some other big name people like Christina Grimmie or the cast of Pitch Perfect, he’s done quite a bit since his start in 2006.
So, what will you typically get when listening to his music? Well, it really depends. He’s got quite a few pop tracks, some dubstep, and even a bit of Daft Punk to add to the mix. He is, of course, quite dependent on his electronic gadgets (which makes him perfect for dubstep), but the sounds in his music are 100% authentically made from either his voice or mouth. You’ll definitely won’t regret listening to this guy, so check him out!
